Moving marketing analytics from Salesforce Marketing Cloud Intelligence (formerly Datorama) to Tableau — typically because organisations want consistent visualization with other enterprise dashboards, want to consolidate BI tools, want more flexible data modelling outside MCI's constraints, or want to reduce data row consumption costs. Decision Foundry has executed this migration multiple times and has it down to a structured 4-phase process.
Four phases. (1) Audit & inventory — what's actually in use in your MCI environment, which dashboards drive decisions, which are zombies. (2) Data model rebuild — moving harmonisation logic from MCI's Harmonization Center to your data warehouse / lakehouse. (3) Tableau build & UAT — rebuilding dashboards in Tableau, parallel-running against MCI for validation. (4) Cutover & training — switching the source of truth, training Tableau users, decommissioning MCI.
Common drivers: (1) standardising on a single BI platform across the organisation; (2) data row consumption costs becoming a major MCI line-item; (3) needing more visualization flexibility than MCI's dashboard editor; (4) AI features expectation gap between marketing and the rest of the business. Sometimes the answer is "stay on MCI and fix what's broken" — we'll say so if that's true. Sometimes Tableau really is the better destination.
Focused migrations (small MCI footprint, 30–60 dashboards) run 3–4 months end-to-end. Enterprise migrations (large MCI footprint with extensive Harmonization Center work, 200+ dashboards, regulatory considerations) run 6–9 months. The rebuild of harmonisation logic outside MCI is usually the longest workstream — not the Tableau dashboard rebuild itself.
This is the biggest technical risk in the migration. MCI's Harmonization Center does work that no BI tool, including Tableau, does natively — it has to be moved into your data layer (Snowflake, Databricks, or similar). We typically rebuild the harmonisation logic in dbt / SQL in your warehouse, then connect Tableau to the cleaned data layer. Skipping this step is the most common reason MCI-to-Tableau migrations fail.
